JAGUAR E TYPE S1 4.2 RESTORATION

Jaguar E-Type S1 4.2 restoration

This Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 FHC was purchased by a collector at a Monaco auction without any prior inspection. Once the car arrived at Classic Hangar and a full mechanical and body inspection was carried out, it became clear that the clean appearance was misleading. Hidden corrosion, poor-quality past repairs and a tired engine meant the car was far from the condition expected. As a result, a decision was made to undertake a complete bare-shell restoration to original specification.

For the body restoration, the shell was stripped back to bare metal. All floor panels were replaced, the left-hand front bulkhead was renewed, and both the left- and right-hand inner sills were repaired. The outer sills on both sides were also replaced, and the entire body underwent a full corrosion-treatment process. The car was then repainted in its original factory colour and all chrome was re-plated to concours standard.

Mechanical restoration included a full rebuild of the original 4.2-litre engine to factory specification, followed by a dyno test-bed run. The original carburettors were rebuilt, the gearbox was fully rebuilt, and the rear differential and axles were restored. Both front and rear suspension assemblies were rebuilt, the brake callipers and booster were refurbished, all brake lines were replaced, and the fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel tank were either renewed or restored.

Electrical work consisted of a completely new wiring loom, the installation of an electric cooling fan and replacement of the ignition system to ensure reliability and correct operation throughout.

The interior was restored to its authentic specification, with the seats retrimmed in their original colour and material. A new headlining and new carpets were fitted to complete the cabin, returning it to the correct period appearance and finish.
